It can serve as valuable experience for students preparing for technical, designing and engineering fields. Architectural Design and Construction provides detailed coverage of all aspects of light frame construction. Special emphasis is placed on the use of modern tools, materials, prefabricated components and design. Students create and build a 1/12 scale model studio. Safety tests are required for the operation of tools and machines used in the construction process. Computer programs will be incorporated to determine a bill of material and cost estimates. Dimensional lumber will be fabricated to a scale of 1' = 1" (1/12 scale) and stocked for use in a mini-lumber yard. Computer aided drawing is applied to place an emphasis on floor plans, landscape plans, plot plans, wall sections, elevations and the rendering of a customized studio to be illustrated in a pictorial view. Internet in the classroom will be explored with topics that relate to the design process by studying futuristic homes, interior design, fabrication materials and landscaping. The format of this course offers the potential for integrated projects with other disciplines and permits students to pursue specific interests such as: building contractor, interior designer, computer aided drafts person, and landscape designer.
