 To teach is to learn.

Japanese proverb

The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.

Mark Van Doren

Instruction is moving from the "sage on stage" to the "guide on the side". Teachers act as facilitators and students are put in control of their learning. Students are also permitted to practice the "apprentice model" where pupils who need to learn go to classmates who know more than they do.

"Teaching for Transfer" means learning something in one context and applying it in another. What value is there in knowing something if one cannot retrieve that knowledge or skill and use it in a different situation.

In order to keep the curriculum evolving with future trends, educators need to explore, create and be innovative with computer technology. When teachers act as a catalyst for change, better ideas and improved teaching strategies surface which enhance student learning and performance.

In the secondary system, students are well prepared in the traditional "College Prep" curriculum, and for anyone who does not fit that mold the "Vocational Education" track was the only other choice. Dale Parnell and Dan Hull formed the Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD) developed the name "Tech Prep" to describe a new approach to curriculum that would be viewed as a parallel to "College Prep".

The Technical Preparation Program is a partnership between the two institutional levels that addresses the counseling and curriculum cooperation necessary to produce master technicians. The intent is to encourage technology education for all students K through 14. In particular, the program seeks to challenge the "general education track" student, whom Parnell says, "sees no connectedness, no aim, no purpose to their education, often seeing no point in continuing in school.

Cooperative learning, team teaching, interdisciplinary projects, student technology clubs, virtual high school, web quests, interactive web sites, creating web pages, Internet tours & tutorials, on-line courses, block scheduling, 10 period day, year round school, distance learning, tech prep modules, school to work, partnerships and consortiums are all educational trends of the new century that are worth discussion and investigation.

"Education is not the filling of a vessel, but the kindling of a flame."
