Pre-Engineering Wood Technology is a course of study that is designed to build a fundamental understanding of the classification, characteristics and uses of wood. Each kind of wood has its own peculiar color, working qualities, and properties. Many aspects of dendrology (the study of trees) will be explored. Students will acquire knowledge and skills of the scientist and the technologist. When engineers investigate materials, they start with the study of wood. The computer will be used to explore computer aided design, thus challenging the student's creative abilities. Students will also perform tasks on the Internet to investigate the world of wood technology beyond their classroom walls. After the completion of general shop procedure, hand tool use, power safety and dendrology activities, the student will be expected to construct a variety of woodworking projects. Pre-engineering students will design and fabricate a car for the Grand Prix contest that is annually sponsored by Apollo. Other "hands on" projects will be required that apply multi-sensory activities, help students acquire a technical knowledge base, build confidence dealing with shop procedures, and hone fabrication skills. Students acquire confidence and background experience to pursue higher levels of technical training such as a career in carpentry, construction, forest management, technical fields and engineering.
