Grades 9-12 Students will learn how to communicate an idea or a plan in a picture-like form by making drawings. Types of drawings include: single views, stretch outs, geometric constructions, sketching, multi views, symbol libraries & floor plans, sections, auxiliarys, pictorials and perspectives. They will learn the proper use of the following drawing instruments: drafting machines, triangles, compass, dividers, templates, mechanical pencils and scales. There are various ways to illustrate a plan or a drawing for reproduction in a woodworking shop, machine shop or other fabrication plant. Basic skills in the methods of illustration will be developed. Students planning to attend a college, university, or technical school as an engineer - technician - interior designer should take this course. In order to prepare students for the 21st century, computer aided design (CAD) will also be taught. After acquiring fundamental drafting skills and techniques, students will have an opportunity to apply a CAD program (PC Draft). Tech prep self instructional modules using the computer as a tool give students the power to problem solve and be in control of their learning. Freshman and Sophomores can design and fabricate a car for the Grand Prix contest that is annually sponsored by Apollo. Students will use the Internet for research to create multimedia presentations in topics such as: famous architects, great buildings, ancient architecture, bridges etc. Internet in the classroom will also play a vital role in the learning process by navigating interactive sites related to the drafting fields.
