Wiring Diagram

  3- Way Switch Circuit

Hot Wires:

  • black
  • red
  • blue

A white wire is used as a hot wire, being one of the travelers between the switches;

e.g. the lower red wire in this diagram.

White wires are used as hot wires due to the way color coded wires are sheathed in

nonmetallic cable, however the electrician makes a mental note that it is a hot wire by

taping it black or marking it with a permanent marker.... the hot wire colors.

Common Wire- white

(color coded gray in this diagram but always a white wire in the actual circuit).
