Text Box: Delphos FFA Travels to National FFA Convention
The largest gathering of FFA members, recently took place, and sixteen Delphos FFA members were part of it.  Over 55,000 members gathered for the National FFA Convention which  was held October 22-25 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  The purpose of this convention is to gather FFA members from across the nation to celebrate the achievements that have been made of the past year, broaden the horizons of members by exposing them to new places, and motivate them to continue to reach their goals.  This was the first year that the convention was held in Indy, previously, it was held in Louisville Kentucky.
Delphos FFA members boarded a charter bus on Wednesday morning with the Paulding, Tinora, and Wayne Trace FFA chapters.  The first stop was Top Cut Genetics where the students learned about swine semen collection.  They were able to witness the various steps in the collection process as well as see many of the boars that are used at the farm each day.  The group traveled to Akey Feeds in Lewisburg, Ohio where members learned about the various aspects in feed production.  Members toured the plant and were able to see first hand the many steps that are taken to create a quality livestock feed. From there the group headed to Dole in Springfield, Ohio.  At this tour they were treated to the birds eye view of watching all of the steps that are taken to create the bagged lettuce products.  Over 600 products are produced at the facility and members were able to see them enter as raw products and leave as processed ready-to-eat salads.   After checking into the hotel, members headed to Lucas Oil Stadium for a James Otto and Taylor Swift Concert.
Thursday was another busy day for the members; they started their morning by exploring the career show and other sights of downtown Indy.  Early in the morning, members toured the Countrymark Co-Op’s biodiesel hub. They attended a Convention session in which Delphos was honored as a National Three Star Chapter.  After eating at the spaghetti factory, members headed to a hypnotist show and then the Buckeye Bash.
Friday morning came quickly as students loaded the bus and traveled downtown for the first session of the day.  During this session students were inspired by top motivation speaker Mark Scharenbroich.  Members further explored the Career Show and attended leadership workshops as well.  Friday evening members whooped and hollered at the Extreme Bulls Rodeo.
The American Degree Session was the highlight of Saturday morning.  Eight Delphos FFA members, Brad Trentman, Jeff Pohlman, Kyle Luersmean, Andrew Swick, Justin M. Rahrig, Ben Warnecke, Kyle Hempfling, and Matt Elwer, were awarded their American Degree, which is the highest award a member can earn.  This degree is given to only one-half of one percent of the members.  After this prestigious event, members traveled home to Delphos!

Recently, 21 Junior and Senior Delphos FFA members volunteered their time at the Canal Commission.  The members helped the Commission to carry down Christmas Trees and decorations that we will be used for the holiday season.  Pictured is Eric Dickman making one of many trips down the museum’s stairs.

Text Box: Ag Business Class Starts PALS Program

The afternoon section of Ag Business recently started a PALS program.  PALS, which stands for Partners in Active Learning Support, is a National FFA Program in which high school students teach elementary students about agriculture. The program was designed to allow the younger members of the community to interact with positive role models while learning about agriculture.  The class plans to visit kindergarten classrooms each month with a different lesson.  October was focused on pumpkins and numerous uses for this fall fruit.  The experience was very positive and all four kindergarten classes at Franklin elementary were visited.  The students are already preparing their lessons for November!

Text Box: Hayride, Bonfire, and Chili Party!!!
Every October, FFA members get excited about what most view as the best meeting of the year.  The reason, after this FFA meeting, members take a hayride to a local member’s house where they have a bonfire and chili party.
This year’s meeting was hosted by FFA member Kaia Waldick and her parents Kathy and Juergen.  Over sixty-five students attended the meeting and participated in the festivities.  Before all the fun started, members took part in the monthly business meeting.  Topics that were discussed included: upcoming National FFA Convention, Food Science and Parliamentary Procedure Contests, and Greenhand Initiation Ceremony.  The main topic of the meeting was kicking off the annual gift sales fundraiser.  All members are expected to participate in this fundraiser.  The senior class is in charge of organizing this event and committee chairmen Collin Etzkorn and Kaia Waldick gave the report.
After the meeting adjourned, all members participated in the hayride, and the recreation continued once we arrived at the Waldicks.  The highlight was a competitive apple bobbing contest in which many members competed.  The Delphos FFA would like to once again thank the Waldick’s for offering to host this event.

Text Box: Dulton Moore Travels to Iowa for World Food Prize
Last month we mentioned that Dulton Moore would be traveling to Iowa to the World Food Prize contest based on an essay he wrote about fighting food problems in Burkina Faso.  During the third week of that month, Dulton traveled to the prestigious gathering of world leaders in the food security sector.  He has the opportunity to listen to many keynote speakers at symposium sessions and at various meal functions.  He also attended the World Food Prize Award Ceremony where Senators George McGovern and Bob Dole were awarded the World Food Prize for their efforts in creating world feeding programs and domestic programs for children to get meals while at school.  Dulton also had the opportunity to share his paper with past World Food Prize recipients and other professors that deal with food security.  Great job Dulton!
