DELPHOS — Jefferson got the bats out once again Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats erupted for nine runs in the third inning and rolled up their 11th win of the 2009 season versus three losses, beating Fort Jennings 11-4 at Wildcat Field.
Josh Miller (4-1; 6 innings, 1 hit, 1 earned run, 5 strikeouts, 3 free passes) got the win.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After a leadoff single by Corey Bastian (2-for-2, 2 RBIs, 1 run), Sean Fisher forced him at second with a ground ball to the shortstop. With two outs, Fisher scored on a ground ball by Ryan Kortokrax.
In the Musketeer second inning, number 6 hitter Nolan Neidert blooped a single to left and would score on a fielder’s choice later in the inning.
Jefferson came back with one run in the second scored by Jordan Jettinghoff on a single by Fisher.
In the Fort Jennings (6-5) third, Drew Mesker (2-for-4) started the inning with a triple to the right-centerfield gap. He then attempted to score on a passed ball and was thrown out at home on the Kortokrax-to-Miller relay which ended the scoring threat.
Jefferson blew the game open in the bottom half of the inning against Musketeer starter Jared Calvelage (2 innings, 9 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned, 3 walks), tallying nine runs, led off with a solo shot to left by Kortokrax. Aaron Schuerman (3-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI) singled, then stole second. Matt Gerdeman brought him home on a single to right. Taylor “T-Bone” Hesseling (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) singled and Jettinghoff walked to load the bases for Matt Antalis, who walked to record the RBI. Bastian hit a double to left to score two runners. Fisher reached on an error and Miller added a single to score Antalis. Schuerman followed with a single to score Bastian. Fisher scored on a single by Gerdeman and Hesseling lined out to right for the sacrifice to score Miller.
Miller pitched the first four innings and Schuerman entered the game in the fifth at the mound (Miller went to shortstop). Jennings scored two runs, both of whom became baserunners as a result of walks. Josh Calvelage doubled to score both Tyler Good and Ryan Schuerman.
The sixth inning started with back-to-back hit batters and a single by Good to load the bases. Miller returned to the mound to complete the inning. The run scored on a fielder’s-choice groundout to Fisher at first, followed by a comebacker to the mound and a strikeout. Miller also pitched a scoreless seventh inning to complete the game.
Jefferson heads to Convoy tonight to battle Northwest Conference power Crestview for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
Fort Jennings is slated to host Ayersville tonight.
