Fast Start Propels Miller City

DELPHOS — Miller City felt right at home as the “host” team Tuesday night at Wildcat Field in Delphos.

They scored all eight of their runs in the first three frames and held off Jefferson’s version of Wildcats 8-4 in non-conference baseball action.

The game was moved from Miller City due to wet grounds.

The Jeffcats (2-2) came off a 7-0 loss to Parkway the night before and head man Troy Montenery felt there was a carry-over.

“We picked up right where we left off last night. I just didn’t feel like we into it mentally at the start and Miller City was,” he explained. “Miller City came out being aggressive and hitting the ball all over. We made some mistakes in the field again that put us behind.”

Being aggressive is what Miller City (2-1) coach Cary Melia has wanted from his young crew.

“We start two seniors, three juniors and four sophomores. We have been looking for aggression so far,” Melia noted. “For us, how we hit will dictate what kind of season we have. We didn’t hit our first two games.”

Miller City got off quickly against starter Josh Miller (1-1) with an error on a ball hit by Seth Lammers (3 runs, 2 RBIs). Troy Schroeder singled. An out Later, both scored on a double to center by Russell Lammers (2-for-3) for a 2-0 edge.

Jefferson got its first two runners on in the second — Adam Kraning (2-for-3) and Aaron Schuerman — against starter Mitch Wenzinger (1-0) but couldn’t get them further.

The “home” team added three more in the next frame, all unearned. Two errors allowed S. Lammers and Schroeder to score and a single by R. Lammers brought home the third run, chasing Miller for Craig Carder. He got the final out of the second.

The Red and Black got two 2-out runs in the third: a single by Sean Fisher (2-for-4), a triple by Miller (2 runs) and a passed ball; to cut the deficit to 5-2.

The Blue and Gold got those back plus one in the home half. A 2-run double to deep left by Seth Lammers and a run-scoring bouncer to left by Schroeder accounted for Miller City’s final run.

All seemed quiet until the top of the seventh, when the Jeffcats made things interesting against reliever Jared Niese. Matt Antalis singled sharply up the gut. Matt Gerdeman singled to center, with Antalis going to third. On the throw there, Gerdeman delayed going to second and was a dead duck. Fisher’s sharp hit up the middle plated Antalis. Miller forced Fisher at second. Kraning lined a hit to left and Schuerman doubled inside the bag at first to get Miller around to home for an 8-4 deficit. However, Niese got the third out to end the game.

“Right now, it’s just a matter of being mentally tough for us; it isn’t a lack of experience,” Montenery added. “We need players simply to step up and make plays. These kids are working hard every day; we just need to be focused every day.”

Jefferson is slated to be at Lima Central Catholic for the NWC opener Thursday.

“You saw our strengths tonight: pitching and defense. We did a good job in both and we feel we can depend on them; the hitting came through tonight,” Melia added.

Miller City hosts Ottoville tonight.
