Pirates Slog Past Lady Jeffcats
DELPHOS — It was a very sloppy fast-pitch softball game between the Bluffton Pirates and the Jefferson Wildcats Monday night — and that was before the cold rain fell.
With nine errors between the teams and some aggressive hitters, it made for a forgettable night for the pitchers.
Hines (7 IP, 9 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned, 1 base-on-balls, 10 strikeouts, 1 hit batter, 2 wild pitches) from Bluffton got the 10-6 win over Jefferson senior ace Shauna Bowers (4-4; 7 IP, 13 hits, 10 runs, 5 earned, 3 free passes, 7 Ks, 3 wild pitches).
“We just didn’t have a sharp focus from the beginning and then when the weather turned bad, everybody lost it. We just had to keep playing,” Jefferson coach Brad Rostorfer said.
Kristin McKamey led the game off and led all hitters collecting four hits and scoring three runs for Bluffton (10-3, 4-2 NWC). Bassitt went 2-for-5 for Bluffton (2 doubles) with four RBIs and Wheeler went 2-for-5 with three RBIs (2 doubles). Laing went 2-for-3 (2 runs).
“We’re a young team and we’ve made a lot of strides this season, so it isn’t surprising that we had a game like this,” he added. “We kept fighting, which is a great sign. We scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh; we were attacking the ball even though we were cold and wet. It’s frustrating because we lost a game we felt we should have won; that shows our progress, too. It came down to a play or an out here and there earlier in the game.”
Jefferson (5-7, 3-2 NWC) got two hits apiece from Bowers (2 doubles, 3 runs batted in) and Megan Moreo (2 runs, 2 RBIs) but it was not enough.
The Wildcats host Ottoville at 5 p.m. tonight.
