Library Manual

                Mission and Goals

Spencerville High School Library supports the District in its goal to provide a learning environment dedicated to the development of student intellect and character toward the purpose of achieving individual fulfillment within the global and local community.  The Library strives to this end by collaborating with staff, aligning library resources with local curriculum, providing students a collection that is varied, current, authorative and interesting, and by providing leadership and instruction in information literacy skills, as well as reinforcing technology skills.

                              Information Literacy

Information literacy has been defined as “the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information in order to become independent learners.”  (Middle States Commission on Higher Education)

An information literate student at the high school level should--according to Academic Content Standards: k-12 Library published by Ohio Dep’t of Education--be able to investigate information through independent discovery… read a variety of literary materials, and practice responsible usage and ethical behavior when using library materials.

In addition, a graduating student to be information literate should able to evaluate in the best manner his or her chosen information sources.

And finally, ideally a graduating Ohio student should have learned and be able to apply a research process model such as Big Six.

                     Librarians

You are encouraged to become an independent researcher by first attempting to use the information and technology literacy skills you have been taught.  However, a certified library media specialist is available to help you.  If you can’t find what you need or need help beginning your research, ASK A LIBRARIAN.

       Library Hours

Library hours are the same as regular school hours. During lunch, the library is open only during 5C.  However, students are allowed and encouraged to use the facility before and after school as long as the media specialist is present.

                            Borrowing Policies

While there are no age or grade level restrictions on the use of resources, the use of the library is to be considered an academic privilege that is conditional upon compliance with the policies and procedures set by the school and also with those specific to the library facility itself.

Books are checked out for 21 days and are usually non-renewable.

Five books may be checked out at one time.

Having one overdue book will block a student from checking out additional materials
until the overdue book is returned.

There are no fines assessed.  Therefore, detentions may be assigned as an effort to retrieve severely overdue books.

Library Procedures

All school rules apply when using the library.

Students are expected to respect each other’s right to a quiet place to read, study,

                            and research.

There are three kinds of Library Passes:

Study Hall Pass—given by SH teacher

These are for the purpose of checking out books and/or making up tests in the library during a study hall.  There is a return pass to SH.  Students should come to the library at the beginning of the period and will return to SH.

General Library Pass—given by content area teacher

These are given in advance for the student to show to SH teacher in order to be excused to go to the library.  These are for use when a teacher is assigning work that requires the use of library resources, either print or electronic. The student should plan to stay in the library for the entire time unless required by the teacher to return to a class.

Honors Pass—given by the library media specialist

Any student who is listed on the quarterly Honor Roll for grades may request an Honors Pass.  This pass allows for unlimited use of the library without requiring any other pass.  The pass is kept in the student’s Planner for the quarter.  New passes are issued each quarter. The student will stay in the library for the entire period.

All study hall students must report to study hall for attendance before coming to the library.  Passes are given (shown—Honors Pass) to library media specialist upon arriving.  Students arriving from a class should have a Library Pass from the teacher who is sending them.

Computers

First and foremost, computer use is for academic purposes. Records of student computer use are kept.  Any student having a computer pass (General Library Pass) from a teacher will have first seating at a computer.  Students are required to follow the school’s Acceptable Use Policy at all times, and any infractions will be dealt with according to school policy.
