The Reading Center was originally known as the Little Red School House
The Title I Program has been at Spencerville since the mid 1960's
The Title I Program is a federally funded program
The Title I Program is audited by the State Education officials and must meet a wide variety of criteria
Approximately 70 K-3 students are served in this program per year
The Title I Program is a supplement to the classroom reading program, not replacement
Title I teachers are annually evaluated by the Elementary Principal
Title I teachers must also meet state standards and requirements
Title I teachers work with students in kindergarten, first, second, and third grades
Title 1 teachers work with students for a half an hour at a time in groups of 4 or less
Students are referred to our program by their classroom teachers
Students are assessed to see if they qualify to receive our help
Students attend the Reading Center five days a week
Students receive additional help in reading and writing
Reading Center Staff also work on skills that the classroom teachers are teaching in order to support the classroom curriculum
Students select books for the Reading Center Library, read and return them working toward various incentives and rewards
The three students who have read the most books throughout the year receive a plaque and or ribbon
Parents receive letters and progress reports updating them regarding their child's progress
Parent/Teacher conferences are held twice a year both in the fall and spring
Parents are encouraged to attend a parent information meeting in the fall when the Reading Center staff will explain the program
Title I students and their parents are strongly encouraged and invited to attend the annual Title I Make-It-Take-It Workshop held in the spring. At the Make-It-Take-It Workshop, parents and their children make and play games they can use throughout the summer
Occasionally the Title I students go into their regular classroom to share some of the activities with their classmates
The Reading Center celebrates Partner Week each March when each student gets to invite a classmate to attend the Reading Center with them. The Title I students are excited to "show off" the Reading Center and some of their favorite activities with their classroom.
