Project Oceanus, a marine science class, is offered by the Hancock County Schools as an educational option to selected juniors. This class teaches a basic marine science curriculum with an emphasis on the relationship of the ocean ecosystem and global ecology. Taught by four area educators who have participated in the "Ocean Focus" course at Bowling Green State University, the class is held on Wednesday evenings at Liberty-Benton High School from 6:30-8:30 P.M. beginning in January. Three field trips are part of the course. One is to B.G.S.U. to tour the Marine Science Lab and to learn to snorkel. A second is to Old Woman Estuary at Lake Erie to study the fresh water ecosystem and environmental issues. The final trip is a seven-day trip to the Florida Keys to apply course knowledge by investigating and comparing different marine habitats and contrasting the salt water ecosystem with the fresh water system. Students also examine the effects of the human populations on the marine environment to observe why ecological efforts are necessary. Participants in this class are awarded one-half unit of science credit.
