
Three Key Components:
CONTENT: The information included and how well it’s organized.
LANGUAGE: Vocabulary, sentence variety, and how well the writer says what he/she want to say.
WRITNG CONVENTIONS: Spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
4 EXCELLENT
Clearly speaks to the topic with supporting details
Logical organization: beginning, middle, and end
Thoughts, ideas, and word choice reflect development at/beyond grade level.
Writing conventions reflect mastery at or above grade expectations.
3 COMPETENT
Generally relates to the topic with few supporting details
Reflects the use of a plan, or some logical order
Thoughts, ideas, and word choice reflect basic grade level appropriateness
Writing conventions at grade level do not hamper understanding
2 DEVELOPING
Demonstrates awareness of topic
Logical organization jumbled
Vocabulary and ideas predictable/commonplace
Writing conventions hamper understanding
1 INADEQUATE
Slightly/Vaguely related to the topic
Illogical organization
Vocabulary and ideas are limited and inappropriate
Writing conventions errors too numerous for readability
0 UNSCORABLE
No response or totally disregards the tasks
Reflects the use of a plan, or some logical order
Thoughts, ideas, and word choice reflect basic grade level appropriateness
Writing conventions at grade level do not hamper understanding.
