  1. Magazines, Magazines! (9-12):  There are several “free” copies of magazines in the guidance office shelves about colleges, careers, the military, etc.  Stop by anytime and pick some up!
  2. Money for College (9-12):  Be sure to check out the (national) scholarship postings outside the office.  We will be happy to copy any information that you need.

**Seniors should take the October (and December?) ACT.  Juniors should take the ACT for the first time in February, April and/or June.

  1. Fee Waivers are available for the ACT…check out the details on the website to see if you qualify:  www.actstudent.org
  2. Mercer County S.T.O.P. (Students Teaching Other Prevention) Group is looking for new members.  This is a county-wide group for students interested in maintaining a drug and alcohol free lifestyle.  The STOP group is very active in community service activities, and are an important part of S.T.A.R. weekend (for Junior High Students).  See the poster outside the office, or Mrs. Kaiser for more details.  The program’s advisor is Mindi Lisi:  419/586-4030.
  3. Looking for a college that’s right for you?  Check out collegeboard.com!  It’s a great website to help you narrow down your choices.
  4. College Visits at FRHS (grades 11-12):  Several College/University/Military Representatives visit FRHS each year.  Check out the calendar outside the office for upcoming visits.  Juniors and Seniors may sign up for a visit in the guidance office.  (This must be done at least two days prior to the visit.)
  5. Colleges encourage students to apply online!  In some cases, the application fee is waived if a student applies online.  Most Honors Program Applications are only available online.
  6. Upcoming College Fairs:

·         Lima Campus College Fair (OSU and Rhodes State):  Wednesday, October 17 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

  1. Many Colleges hold Fall Open Houses on Saturdays.  These are wonderful days for high school students to explore what a college has to offer.  Check out the hallway bulletin board by the office, college websites, or see Mrs. Kaiser for specific dates.
  2. “How to Help Your Son or Daughter Choose a College” Presented by Van Wright, Admissions Officer at BGSU.  This program is geared to parents of high school students (though some students attend with their parents) and aims to assist them in the college search and high school to college transition processes. It is not designed as s Bowling Green program; rather, it is and effort to give parents general information regarding their role in college selection process.  We hope you can attend!  The presentation will be in the High School Commons on Monday, October 1st, 2007 from 7:00-7:30 p.m.
  3. Miami University Access Initiative:  Miami University will provide tuition and fees for all new first-year students from Ohio entering the Oxford campus that has family incomes of less than $35,000.  The program will continue to provide tuition and fees for eligible students for up to four years.
  4. Eastern Michigan and Ball State Universities offer In-State Tuition for FRHS students.
  5. Ohio Northern University would like to have the names and addresses of seniors who may qualify for one of their many scholarships and awards.  If you are considering ONU, see Mrs. Kaiser ASAP so scholarship information can be mailed to you.
  6. The Ohio State University and Miami University will only accept ACT Scores if they are sent directly from ACT.  So, if you are considering one of these two universities, be sure to include them on your ACT registration as a “College and Scholarship Choice”.  In addition, both of these schools require the “writing” portion of the ACT, and test scores must reach the admissions office PRIOR to December 3rd to be considered for scholarships (i.e. The December test date is too late for Seniors.)
  7. Don’t rule out Private Colleges!  In many cases, you can afford the tuition…apply for the scholarships and grants available to you.  Sometimes, you can attend a private school for the same price as a public one.  The Ohio Student Choice Grant is an automatic award to students opting for private universities.
  8. Students planning to apply to the University of Cincinnati must be sure to apply prior to December 15th to meet the priority deadline for UC Scholarships.  Architecture and design deadline is November 15th.  College-Conservatory of Music deadline is December 1st.
  9. ROTC (Military) Scholarship Information is available on flyers posted outside the office.  Military recruiters visit FRHS throughout the year, and set up in the Commons area at lunch so students can gather information about the military and ask questions.
  10. 1st Annual Mercer Health/Dare Boosters Disc Golf Tournament (9-12): Mercer County High School students can sign up now to participate in the Disc (Frisbee) Golf Tournament held at Mercer County Fairgrounds (rain or shine) on October 12th for 1.5-2 hours from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pre-registration is $5 per person ($7 per person on game day). Registration forms available. Hole-in-one on selected hole will win a brand new 2-door electric car.  Call 419/678-5613 for more info.
  11. Ohio Wesleyan Academic Scholarships: 140 academic scholarships given through their honors program. Students must be ranked in the top 10% of their graduation class. Must have challenged themselves in the most rigorous courses your high school offers and have an ACT Composite Score of 27 or higher.  Deadline is October 15.
  12. Mercer County SWCD Scholarship:(Grade 12): The Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District, along with the Marion Mutual Insurance Association will again be offering a $500 college scholarship to a local high school senior OR college freshman or sophomore. To be eligible, a student must be pursuing or planning to pursue a degree in environmental education, natural resources, agriculture, or a related field. Winners are expected to attend the SWCD’s annual banquet on November 8, 2007. Applications are due on October 24, 2007
  13. Explore Nursing as a Career:  Indiana University East (Richmond, IN) will present to students interested in nursing on Thursday, October 25 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.  RSVP by calling      1-800-959-3278 by October 22.
  14. The Ohio State University's College of Pharmacy is offering our fall Pharmacy Day program

on Saturday, October 27, 2007. The event will begin promptly at 9:30 AM in Parks Hall and attendees are encouraged to arrive 10 - 15 minutes early that Saturday morning. THERE IS NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR PHARMACY DAY.

  1. Coca-Cola Scholars Program: Each year the Coca-Cola Foundation awards 250 achievement-based scholarships. Awards are from $10,000-$20,000.  Apply online at http://www.coca-colascholars.org/ Applications must be received by October 31.
  2. 2008 SAE Engineering Scholarships:  are available to seniors planning to pursue a degree in Engineering or related sciences (math, chemistry, physics, biology, technologies, computer science, etc.).  Deadline to apply is December 1, 2007.
  3. AXA Achievement Scholarship: AXA is offering both $10,000 and $15,000 national scholarships. Winners are known as AXA Achievers.  They are students who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family and community. . To learn more about the scholarship go to http://www.axa-achievement.com/.  Application deadline is December 15, 2007.
  4. Mercer County Elks is offering several scholarships:
    1. Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship:  senior applicants must exhibit scholarship, leadership, and financial need.
    2. Elks National Foundation Legacy Awards:  eligible applicants are: any child, grandchild, step-child, step-grandchild or legal ward of a living Elk who joined on or before April 1, 2005, or a charter member of a Lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2005.  The Elk must be a paid member- up through March 31, 2008.  Great-Grandchildren are not eligible.

Copies of all Elks applications are also available online at:  www.elks.org/enf/schoars, and are due by January 11, 2008

  1. The Mercer County Civic Foundation has a small pool of student loan funds available.  These low-interest $900 college loans are renewable, and the 4% interest rate does not begin to accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if repaid within that time.  Applications due by June 1st.
