Club Statement:
The St. Henry German Club
sets out to expand its members’ knowledge of foreign language and culture. On
top of learning the actual language, students commit to various learning
activities throughout the school year.
In the fall, construction paper and the German colors of black, red, and yellow appear as the club members create personalized Zuckertüten(cones filled with treats) for kindergarten students to enjoy. Before that even starts, however, German students take a lick at ordering desserts using foreign language in the ice-cream unit. Ice cream toppings provided by the St. Henry Dairy Dream give students a large selection to choose from when filling their bowls, but the only toppings given are the ones asked for using proper German language.
After fundraising in October, members break out the paint, tinsel, and gingerbread as they prepare for Weihnachtsfest (Christmas). Students compete to assemble the tastiest looking gingerbread houses while celebrating the season with beautiful paintings on the media center windows. The gingerbread houses are displayed at St. Henry Public Library through the school’s holiday break.
The German club has taken many field trips in the past. Members have sung along at a German concert and even danced with Lima’s German dancers on foreign language day. Trips to the Old Barn Out Back and the Hofbräuhaus have allowed German students to experience German cuisine while taking in the atmosphere of a German brewery/pub. Last year, German III students traveled to Fairview Elementary German Language School in Cincinnati where its students learn the language beginning in Kindergarten. These experiences have provided entertainment as well as lessons for learning more about Germany.

Fundraisers:
Our fruit sale, the key
fundraiser for the school year takes place in late October continuing into
November. The fruit sale provides profit for both our organization and our
members. Members receive half of the fundraiser’s profit while the German
club takes in the remainder. Our sales effort, under the managerial eye of
our fruit sales’ chairperson, Greg Hess, coordinates with the fruit and nut
sales of the St. Henry FFA. Fruit is purchased from the same supplier for
both organizations and sold for separate profits. Money then filters into
the German club treasury for use in covering the cost of trips, T-shirts,
and other supplies needed throughout the year. We would like to thank
everyone who has supported our sales effort in the past. Danke!
