THE FORT

Seeing the bones of slaughtered men,

Knowing a fresh battle might begin,

The troops of Anthony Wayne began

To build a fort using every hand.

Axes chopped from morn till night,

Working quickly, spurred by fright,

Determined not to let Washington down,

Men built a fort to stand their ground.

And then in June, the Indians came.

From every nation, they took aim.

Angered by the settlers’ greed,

Taking land they didn’t need.

Indians attacked with bows and guns,

Outnumbering soldiers ten to one.

Arrows flamed and bullets flew.

For two long days the battle grew.

But in the end, the fort prevailed.

Indians retreated, knowing they’d failed.

The Treaty of Greenville later was penned,

The frontier conflict had come to an end.
