High School Principal’s Report
Kevin E. Wilson
February 12, 2007

Band/Choir

Mr. Archinal along with the Band & Choir students have been putting in extra time during lunch to prepare for their up coming competitions.  They are to compete the weekend of March 3rd and 4th.  To help with this preparation Mr. Archinal has asked three music professors to come to Wayne Trace on the 22nd of February to hold a mini clinic.  With the efforts of Mr. Archinal and the students this should be a good year for our competition.

Vantage Visit

Our sophomores will be going to Vantage on Tuesday the 6th of February.  Each student was given a chance during the January 17th visit to select two programs they might be interested in.

Vo Ag Week

The Vo Ag department came with dress-up days for the week of February 19th.  They will also be serving breakfast to the staff on Wednesday morning of that week.

Lock-down drill

The high school held its lock-down drill this past January.  It was a successful drill.  We have only two issues to correct.  After completing the drill it was found that a few of the classrooms were not quiet as they should have been.  The second issue deals with the code used to alert the staff and students of this drill.  I have spoken with Sarah at Payne and have also asked the staff to assist in coming up with a good code that will not alert an intruder of our knowledge of his/her being in our building.

Friday’s events:

We have several career events taking place on Friday February 9th.  We have our 9th and 10th grade students going to Archbold for a career day presentation.  Our 11th grade students are off for a college visit and finally our seniors will be here attending sessions set up by our Learn and Serve committee.  They will be working on resume writing, along with other items that will help them as they graduate.

Findlay College Credit:

Mr. Alt and I attended a session at Findlay on a joint venture in which we will be able to offer classes here at Wayne Trace taught by our staff for dual credit.  I am very excited about this opportunity for our students.  More information will be shared at the Board Retreat.

Subject:  Principal’s Report for February

1- The 3rd-6th grade teachers have all completed an additional 2-hour Study Island training with Carol Swary.  Carol came in and worked with the grade level teachers to show them the newest features of Study Island.  One new feature, which is free this year, is Benchmark Testing.  The teachers are able to produce a test to see if the students have mastered those standards they have already covered.  The teachers then took those results and decided how to best use them in their classroom- what needs re-taught, what the students understand well, and what needs reviewed.  It has been a good resource for the teachers before the OATs.

2-  Our After-School tutoring program through the TANF grant will be hosting a Family Fun Night on Feb. 13th.  The tutors will be talking about the program, giving some study tips, and playing Family Bingo.  They are also going to do an activity with the students ahead of time, and have them decorate cookies for the evening.  We will also be serving pizza.  This has been a very positive program!

3-  We have completed the second round of DIBELS reading assessments and first round of the Aimsweb assessments.  We are still working on the results, but the DIBELS scores were very exciting.  We saw leaps in scores with our K-2 students.  In fact, the second grade set a record.  Every student improved!  Every student!  The teachers are working hard at reorganizing the Reading Intervention groups based on the new scores, and we are trying to get a Math Intervention program organized.

4- Energy Report- We have been keeping steady with the plans that Bill Childs has made to make the building as energy efficient has possible.  We were having trouble keeping the gym heater running.  It would run and then shut off and not start again.  Bill had been in contact with the company over and over.  Finally they said they should come and hook it up to the computer, but that would cost around $600 or more.  Bill wanted to try one more thing before doing that.  He wanted to replace a connector. They sent him the connector, he put it on, and we have not had trouble with it since then.  The part cost about $30.  We are working on how to keep the sensor warm enough when it is extremely cold out.  When that happens, it can not get warm enough to start the heater.

5- LA Electric will be coming Feb. 19th to finish working on the electric boxes from the fire.  They are coming on a holiday because they need to turn the electric off for the day.

Report to the Wayne Trace Board of Education

Monday, February 12, 2007

Wayne Trace Grover Hill Elementary – Alan Lautzenheiser, Principal

1. Sarah and I have discussed dates for our Ohio Achievement Test Booster sessions for this year. If the Board would allow us, we would like to hold these sessions on the three Saturdays preceding the Ohio Achievement Test. Those dates would be April 14, 21, and 28. Last year the Board made it possible for us to offer breakfast to those students who participated. If that is possible again this year it would be great. We would start breakfast at 8:30 with the sessions running from 9 until 11.

2. Carol Swary has been in this month to work with grade level teachers and intervention teachers in grades 3 – 6 on the Benchmark Testing module for Study Island. This allows our teachers to give standards based assessments to their students four times during the year and receive feedback through Study Island indicating what state standards and indicators have been mastered by the individual student and what indicators require more instruction. This will be helpful in targeting meaningful intervention and support for our students and will help the classroom teachers better determine the lessons and areas of instruction that are most needed.

3. I want to thank Ray Speice for the great job he has done during our recent cold wave to make sure the building was properly heated as well as safe and comfortable for our students. Tim Baker also had the busses fired up and running each morning by the time I arrived at school. In order to get through the challenging situations we sometimes face requires a team effort and I appreciate Ray, Tim, and all of our staff and students for pulling together.

4. Friday, February 2, Ms. Spinner, Mrs. Peck, and several parent volunteers took 30 sixth grade students to the Ft. Wayne Civic Theater to see Into the Woods. Ms. Spinner coordinated preparations for this trip with the sixth grade teachers to integrate instruction across the curriculum to tie into this educational experience.

5. Enrollments have been confirmed and transmitted to Pearson Educational Measurement for our spring administration of the Ohio Achievement Test. I have also received the form to apply for a waiver to exceed the 1% cap for Alternate Assessment. Interestingly, the request for waiver must be applied for before March 15, while the alternate assessments are due into the state by March 5. So our intervention teachers put in a lot of time and effort without really knowing whether it will be scored or not. I hope to at the very least receive the 1.8% cap that we received last year.

6. I was notified by Phillips Pro Audio that the legislative change to the dates of Daylight Savings Time will require the changing of computer chips in our master clock and bell program. The cost for this is estimated at $647.

 7. I will once again be managing the Division IV Girl’s Sectional Tournament at the Jr/Sr High. The dates for this tournament are February 20 and 24.

8. Andrea Scharf is the first student at WTGH to reach the 200 point level for the year in the Accelerated Reading program. Her achievement earns her a 200 point AR T-shirt as well as having her name engraved on the permanent AR Achievement Plaque in the library. So far, 5 other students have reached the 100 point level this year and hope to get over 200 by year’s end.

9. Due to my absence at this Board meeting, we have moved my Educational Impact presentation back to the March Board meeting.
