High School Principal’s Report
September 10, 2007
Kevin E. Wilson, Principal

Maintenance Report

At the end of last year one of the teachers on the south end of the building put in a request to have his windows tinted.  This past summer Kenny and Mary took some time and tinted the larger upper windows in the south classrooms.  We are hoping to see a decrease in our energy use by doing this.

Homecoming

Next week is homecoming week.  Ms. Fisher and the Student Council have put together a week full of activities.  During this week we will have the high school classes compete against one another for bragging rights and a pizza party for the winners.

Staff Professional Development

On Thursday, September 6, 2007 the ESC came to meet with the junior high and the special education staff to discuss our test scores.   We are looking at how our Economically Disadvantaged students scored.  Future discussions will be on what we can do to ensure this sub group’s test scores will continue to rise.

Testing

The students in grade 8 will be taking the Stanford and Ottis-Lennon Test on September 18th and 19th.

Student Leadership

Teaching our students to become great leaders is a goal this year.  We want our students to understand that being a school leader is not a popularity contest but a chance to have a voice in school decisions.

To help accomplish this goal Ms. Fisher will be taking ten student leaders to a leadership conference on October 10.  Each year Ms. Fisher takes ten students to this conference.  This gives our student leaders a chance to meet with other school leaders and discuss issues and solutions to those issues.

Secondly, I have contacted Kimball Camp in Reading, Michigan.  They offer daily or over night leadership retreats.  An over night retreat would cost $40 per student while the daily rate is $36 per student.  The cost for taking about 21 students will be just under $1,000.  Money for this retreat would come from the Principal’s fund.  I am currently looking into an over night retreat for October 17th and 18th.  A few of the team (leadership) build activities offered include: Teambuilding, Climbing Tower, Ropes Courses, and Wilderness Adventures.  I have included a copy of the brochure for your viewing.

Right now I am in the reviewing stage for this trip, but would like to have board approval to pursue this leadership opportunity.  We would leave on a Wednesday and return during the school day on Thursday.

Future Activities

To help our students stay motivated or maybe even get motivated I have contacted Joel Penton’s people about him coming to Wayne Trace.  We have set November the 13th as a day in which Joel will come and share with our student body.  I do understand this is the same date in which our band will be at the OSBA Conference but since Joel is in the area that day already we can save some money by having him on the 13th.  Joel will be speaking to the high school students during a 9:00 am assembly and again to the junior high at 10:00 am.  The cost for this day will be $600 which will be covered by the Principal’s fund.

Subject:  Principal’s Report for September

1-  Open House went well.  We had a lot of parents and students come in, meet their teacher, and bring their supplies.

2- We found that the heating/cooling computer clock was off internally.  What we were able to see on the computer was not what was happening, so the air was running during the summer when it was programmed, on our end, to be shut down.  We lost power again Friday night, and we are finding that the security and heating/cooling computers are off again.  We are working on this problem.

3-  We have had a great start to the school year.  Everything has been fine and running smoothly with the classes and the students.

4- We are especially excited this year to have Renaissance Enterprise as our AR program.  Renaissance Enterprise gives the students access to ALL the quizzes Renaissance makes - over 100,000.  In other words, if Renaissance makes a quiz for a book, the students will have access to that quiz.  WT Payne Elementary had ownership of almost 6,000 quizzes, so you can see there will be a big difference in choices.

5- We will be celebrating Grandparents Day throughout the month of September.  Each grade level will be given a date where they can invite their grandparents to join them for lunch.

Report to the Wayne Trace Board of Education
Monday, September 11, 2007
Wayne Trace Grover Hill Elementary
Alan Lautzenheiser, Principal

1. The opening of the school year has gone great! The staff has eagerly taken to the new reading series that we adopted. There are still a few components of the series on back order.

2. Teachers at WTGH have completed their assessment of the social studies series. We should be ready to begin negotiations with a company for adoption and purchase in early October.

3. The PTO will hold the kick off for the fall fund raiser on September 17.

4. All students at WTGH were administered the Aimsweb Diagnostic Battery during the first week of school. This will give us a much better baseline to operate from when developing targeted intervention for individual students than using the results from last spring. This diagnostic procedure will be administered a minimum of three more times during the year. It will be administered more often for those students who are receiving intense intervention.

5. We have increased the AR capabilities for our students. It was formerly necessary to purchase individual tests for specific AR books. Now tests are available online. By subscribing to this system we are able to increase the AR opportunities for our students. This enables us to incorporate many books that are already in our library into the AR program.

6. We are planning to hold a Saturday preparation day for our third grade students prior to the administration of the fall Reading OAT. The Board has allowed us to do this in the past with great results. I guess I am asking you to allow us to do that again this year.
