Superintendent’s Report

Mr. Gerber showed all present a clip from WLIO Lima with the lead story from their 11:00 news being the visit from the USDE.

A.     The visit from the United States Department of Education was very valuable and productive for the teachers in all three buildings.  It was also a very positive experience for the presenters.  We certainly appreciated this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  The eight high-quality professional development sessions focused on math, reading, writing, and differentiated instruction.  We thank the WT Board of Education for doing their part in making the USDE visit a success.  We thank the Board for providing lunch on both PD dates in order for the presenters and teachers to network.  Wayne Trace has had a very positive working relationship with the USDE and Carolyn Snowbarger since 2004.  Our plans are to keep the door open with the USDE for any future professional development or educational programming.

B.     We commend all the teachers, maintenance staff, and cooks regarding the extra preparation it took during the two day USDE visit.  The maintenance staff really had the buildings and grounds in tip top shape.  We appreciate the pride they took in their school system.

C.     Congratulations to the HS Concert Choir for receiving straight “1’s” at the Ohio Music Education Association State Large Group Adjudicated Event.  This marks the first State Superior Rating in Wayne Trace history.  In fact, in 1970, Blue Creek High School was the only other ensemble to perform and receive a Superior Rating.  Many people assisted the Concert Choir along the way in which we owe a great deal of gratitude.  Mrs. Joni Wenninger was the choral accompanist for the entire ordeal.  Her wonderful performing qualities were a major part of the success of the choir.  We had several guest clinicians come work with our students on several occasions.  Dr. Ann Usher, Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Education Department at the University of Akron traveled to do a 3 hour clinic with our students.  Mr. Davis Clapsaddle from Paulding H.S. helped us in February with a similar clinic.  Wayne Trace’s own Sharon Spinner was a constant support.  Most importantly, Mr. Archinal’s dedication in conducting and instructing the Concert Choir to perfection.

Students singing in the Superior Rated Concert Choir were Gina White, Danielle Stoller, Kelsey Hughes, Chelsea Holtsberry, Danielle Moser, Devan Oglesbee, Andrea Bechtol, Krista Lambert, Lola Li, Heather Bidlack, Gabby Frake, Chelsea Klewer, Kayla Flint, Kaitlin Humrickhouse, Andrea Balderas, Lauren Craft, Tayla Dix, Matt Helmick, Wade Sisson, Alex Roth, Paul Kipfer, Ethynn Brown, Adam Lassister, Levi Kurtz, Art Stoller, Simon Hessler, Tyler Dunham, Zach Wannemacher, Logan Myers, Brandon Zartman, Morgan Seibert, Michelle Hill, Sherri Linn, Megan Miller, Jessica King, Kendra Liggett, Hannah Stoller, Cassie Wagoner, Ella Woody, Brenna Dunham, Samantha Davis, Cassie Baker, Samantha Wiswell, Angie Young, Cambi Jo Edwards, Miranda Dobbelaere, Vivan Baker, Shawna Arnett, Kathleen Sponseller, Brittany Bechtol, and Ashley Bechtol.

D.     Congratulations to our East Campus (WTGH) teachers.  Congratulations to Kathy Sinn, Mike Bok, Jessica Davis, Beth Bauer, Tricia Beining, Jo Ellen Sisson, and Carol Swary for receiving the Hewlett Packard Classroom Equipment Grant!  They applied for this national grant and were one of only 130 grants awarded and only 8 in Ohio.  The grant program focuses on improving student achievement through classroom technologies and encouraging interest in STEM subject areas (science, technology, engineering, and math). Recipients of this year’s grant will receive mobile technologies, cash, and training.  WTGH will receive five HP Tablet PCs, five multimedia projectors, five HP digital cameras, five HP Office jet all in one system, software, accessories, and a cash stipend for each teacher.  The company said the total package per team is worth about $31,000.  ($21,182 in products and software, $2,500 in cash for stipends and $7,500 in value for professional development.  Great Job!

H.     George Clemens has willingly and graciously established the Tim Stahl Wrestling Fund.  George has set up this special fund through me to assist needy Wayne Trace students.  The Wayne Trace Wrestling Club would give $1,000 to the Superintendent to be placed in this special fund.  Every year after, the club will make a monetary donation to the Tim Stahl Fund.  It’s up to the discretion of the Superintendent to allocate monies from this fund to help Wayne Trace students.  Student confidentiality will be upheld.  The names of the students receiving assistance from the Tim Stahl Wrestling Fund will always remain confidential.

High School Principal’s Report

May 14, 2007

Students of the Month

Students of the Month for April are: Erin Bowersox, Lauren Craft, Brittany Farquhar, Natalie Gordon, Riley Linder, Marcie McDougle, Lyndsey Ross, Alicia Simindinger, Colton White, Ashley Goeltzenleuchter, Alesha Mobley, Emily Shuherk, Beth Smith, Nolan Sinn, Lindsay Gibson, Jalyn Egnor, Amanda Ferguson, Steven VanVerlah, Kelsey Heck, Abbey Linder, Casey Eblin, and Caleb Davis.

Summer OGT Testing

For Wayne Trace to offer the OGT during the month of July we will need to offer a ten hour review session.  This will be the week of July 9th lasting two hours each day.  For this review session we will need to hire a staff member at the current rate of ($25) per hour.  I will need to administer the test since I am the testing coordinator for the OGT.  The estimated cost for offering the OGT during the summer will be $250 in salary plus benefits for the review session instructor.  There is a chance that we will have several students and need a second instructor for this week.  After talking with Mrs. Johnson I found the instructor or instructors could be paid for through the MSW fund.

Scheduling

Mr. Alt has the schedule completed and most students have them in hand.  As with any year you always have a few issues to work out and that is the phase we are in now.  I would like to thank Mr. Alt along with Mrs. Myers for their hard work in completing this task.

Graduation

At this time we are finalizing the details for the May 20th graduation.  I will have a list of students at the board meeting for your approval.  We do have several students who will not receive the actual diploma during graduation.  Since the OGT scores for this past spring testing are not due in until May 24th and we graduate on the 20th we will not know for sure if a student has met this requirement.  I believe this will affect only a few students.

Senior Dress for Graduation

Earlier this year after speaking with a few staff members I had made the decision to not allow the seniors to paint their graduation caps this year.  I knew some would complain and felt I was ready to deal with the few.  After talking with several students and parents I have since then found that the issue was much bigger than anticipated.  I have spent the last two weeks talking to parents and students and have decided to allow the students to wear their painted caps.  I want this day to be a special day for both student and community and feel that if I attempted to stop the wearing of the painted caps it could be a memorable day but not as I would hope.

University of Findlay – University/School Articulation Dual Enrollment Program

Here are the numbers for the UF-USA program for our Wayne Trace students as of April 30, 2007.

Physics: 4

Calculus: 8

American History: 10

Psychology: 10

Spanish IV: 2

We have two students taking four classes and two students taking three.  I think this will be a very good first year for us in this program.

AP Testing

This year we have two students taking the Calculus AP test and six students taking the English Lit/Composition test.

Vantage Numbers

Since my last report we have a few more students who have decided to attend Vantage.  We are now at 16 junior students attending Vantage next year.

- On May 12th, our students in grades 4, 5 and 6 will have art displayed at the first ever Wayne Trace/Antwerp Art Show.  This will held in the small gym at Antwerp High School from 1-4pm.

- May 17th the teachers will be completing their curriculum maps for the year.

-  The WT Payne PTO will be sponsoring a Carnival to celebrate the school year.  All students will be able to participate in this fun activity.  This year we will have it on May 25th.  We will also have Olympic Day on Friday the 18th.

- As of 4/28/07 WT Payne students have answered 264, 264 Study Island questions.  This does not include all of the questions teachers use to make worksheets, quizzes and tests.

- The day following the USDE in-service, we had several teachers putting into action what they learned.  They were very excited about the strategies they learned.  The in-service was a huge success, and the teachers learned a lot of valuable information.

Report to the Wayne Trace Board of Education

Monday, May 14, 2007

Wayne Trace Grover Hill Elementary – Alan Lautzenheiser, Principal

1. Ohio Achievement Tests were given to students in grades 3-6 the week of April 30. WTGH had 100% attendance in those grades during test week so no make-ups were necessary. Tests sent in during the make-up period are not guaranteed to be scored for our reports from the state in June.

2. I would like to extend my appreciation to support staff and volunteers who gave of their time to assist our students on IEP’s with their accommodations for the Ohio Achievement Test.

3. First grade students will be taking the Stanford test as well as the Otis Lennon before the end of the year. These assessments are used as screeners for gifted classes. The third grade students have taken the writing diagnostic and will be taking the Stanford tests as well.

4. Sarah and I met with George Gilbert from Scott Foresman to negotiate the purchase of Reading materials for next year. We were very pleased with what we were able to negotiate for. Brian has those figures to share.

5. Olympic/Carnival day will be held at WTGH on Monday, May 21. The rain day for this event will be on Tuesday, May 22.

6. On May 23, students in grades 3 and 6 will be traveling to the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio in Van Wert for a Young People’s Concert presented by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. Funding for this trip was made possible through a gifted grant from the ESC in place of a Muse Machine Assembly this year.

7. Awards Day Assemblies will be held on May 24. Awards for grades 1-3 will be presented at 9:00 a.m. Awards for grades 4-6 will be presented at 12:45. Kindergarten recognition activities will also take place on that day at 9:30 for KA and 12:30 for KB.

8. The WTGH Battle of the Books team finished as runners-up at the Paulding County Battle of the Books. Our team was made up of Logan Fast, Janey Janka, Arlen Stoller, Mackenzie Haney, Andrew Ludwig, and Corbin Showalter.

9. COSI on Wheels was a rousing success at WTGH. Thanks to all of the parent volunteers who made it possible.

10. May 17 will be our final Curriculum Mapping work day of the year. The release time for mapping and the collaborative way of working on our curriculum maps this year has been very valuable.
