Superintendent’s Report

A.     The 2008-2009 University of Findlay-School Articulation Dual Enrollment Program has a very positive enrollment.  Wayne Trace currently has 20 students taking 42 college classes.  Mrs. Annette Sinn’s Physics 250 class has 10 students enrolled.  Mr. Jack Baumle’s Calculus 141 class has 12 students enrolled.  Miss Fisher’s Psychology 113 class has 12 students enrolled.  Mrs. Olofsson’s Spanish IV class has 8 students enrolled.  This program has been very beneficial the last two years.  Wayne Trace students receive college credit during the regular school day without leaving the halls of Wayne Trace.  They jump-start their college education at a fraction of the cost of attending college.  They do not miss out on the high school experience.  With the high cost of gas the students do not have travel expenses.

B.     Congratulations to Jana Smithmyer, Craig Miller, and Jim Linder for successfully completing our first round of archery instruction for our 7-12 physical education students.  The P.E. curriculum was expanded by adding the Archery Program for our students.  I also want to thank Dave Bagley, Fairview Superintendent, for providing support for the Wayne Trace Archery Program.

C.     Congratulations and Best Wishes on the retirements of Claudia Elliott, Peggy Jo Glick, and Sharon Peck. Between them, they are leaving the district with 90 years of total teaching experience.  All three teachers will be departing WTGH.  Claudia, Peggy, and Sharon will be missed by all of us.  They were true professionals and master educators.  Their love, devotion, and commitment to their students represented the educational foundation they fostered for all the students who walked through their classroom doors.  They always focused on the best interest of their students.  Over the past two years, I was fortunate enough to witness first hand the effectiveness they had in the classroom.  Our students really benefited by having these three outstanding teachers.  We congratulate them and wish them the best on their upcoming retirement.

D.     Presentation of updated drawings and options for the new concession stand.  Board will go out to field after meeting to sketch actual location of building.

WTHS Principal’s Report

Kevin E. Wilson

June 9, 2008

Graduation

Graduation day went well.  I have been asking community members their thoughts on the events that took place during graduation.  I would like to eliminate the bells, horns, and other noise makers from during the ceremony but at this time am unsure of how this would be done with out bringing in the police and having people removed.  One school official I have spoken with informed me that they do not hand out the diplomas until the completion of the ceremony.  I will continue to work on this area.

Schedule

Mr. Alt has revamped the schedule and at this time I feel he has it fine tuned and just about ready to go.  As you may know we have added a 25 minute period between 7th & 8th period to be used for OGT and OAT review times as well as meeting other student needs.

Summer Testing

At this time I have only one student who has informed me of their intent to take the summer OGT.  By Monday I should have a longer list and a recommendation for a staff member to teach this review session.

Hiring

I am planning to complete the interviews for our Science position and bring you a name for hire at the June meeting.  At this time I have three applicants but only one with an integrated license.  My hope is to hire someone with the integrated due to the flexibility this give us in our scheduling.

Summer Maintenance

Kenny & Mary are anxious to get started with the summer cleaning.  With the added school days this has shortened their cleaning time.  I am confident that they will complete the task in good time as they have in the past.

Jared Law

Kenny and I have completed the bleacher inspection and are in the process of writing our report.  We do have some questions and will be contacting the Health Department for those answers.  Most of the deficiencies mentioned in the report have been corrected.  One exception is the safety showers needed for our science labs.  I plan to contact our building contractor to discuss options as well as how this was missed upon their inspection.

Spring Coaches

Mr. Linder or I will give you the status of our coaches or need for coaches.  At this time I am meeting each coach and completing their evaluation process.

1-  I would like to thank Bob and Sharon Forrer for the donation of a piano.  We have several very old pianos, so it is nice to have a newer piano in such good condition.  One piano is so old and in bad shape, they cannot tune it again.  Thank you to Bill Childs, Ray Speice and Kenny Speice for moving the piano for us!!

2- We had our awards program on June 2nd.  We had a lot of awards to give!  We had six 6th graders have all A’s through elementary.  This is their final averages for each year.  Jake Gerber, Matt Klopfenstein, Haley Linder, Brock Worden, Maddie Baumle and Sylvia Young!!

3- WT Payne Elementary students have gone wild with Reading this year!  Our students passed a total of 15,568 tests!!  We had our first 1st grader earn 100 points, Wyatt Stabler.  We had two 6th graders beat the previous high points of 608.  Maddie Baumle earned 634.0 points and Brock Worden set a record of 826.9 A. R. points!!

4- We had 9 students earn from 200-299 A. R. points; 4 students earn from 300-399 A. R. points; one student earn 427.6 points; and 5 students earn over 500 points!  That is addition to Maddie and Brock!!

5- WTPE answered 364,570 Study Island questions this year as of May 31st!!  Several of the students commented that they knew and answer on the OAT because they had a question like that in Study Island.

6-  We were able to get a little extra TANF monies.  We had an After School tutoring program through the school year, and now we can use this money to do a summer program.  We have it set up for them to meet 12 times during June.  They will be doing some service projects, such as cleaning the park and planting flowers.  They will end the program by going to a Wizards game.

7-  We have two teachers going to training for the SmartBoard this summer.  Jennifer Mohr will be taking and Advanced class and Carolyn Ritchhart will be taking a beginners class.

8-  We have earned over $3700 for Market Day through April.  We still have May and June.  The PTO will be taking over for July and August.  We also received $400 worth of books in January!

Report to the Wayne Trace Board of Education

Wayne Trace Grover Hill Elementary – Alan Lautzenheiser, Principal

1. The year wrapped up in fine fashion with our annual Carnival & Olympic Day as well as our Awards Assembly. My thanks to the WTGH PTO and all of the volunteers who helped out, as well as to the Ohio State Patrol, Grover Hill Fire Department, Paulding County Sheriff’s Department, and the Van Wert Red Cross for their participation in our mock accident.

2. Ray and I have contacted three companies regarding the pull-out stage. The general consensus is that particular type of stage is not manufactured anymore. We are still looking, and a representative of one of the companies is supposed to be here in the next two weeks to look at the possibility of repairing the current stage.

3. WTGH fifth grade student, Ashley Burt was injured in practice during the World BMX Championships in China. She injured her leg and ankle. She had the team doctor tape her up so she could compete, but she missed the transfer into the finals by 2 positions. We are very proud of Ashley’s accomplishments and her opportunity to represent Wayne Trace and our area as a member of Team USA. According to her father, she received quite a lesson of the price you pay to were the “Stars and Stripes” in a foreign country.

This sport is more dangerous than I imagined as two members of Team USA were hospitalized with injuries and had to fly home on special airplanes. A 14 year old girl on the French team broke her neck.

4. The WTGH Student Council sponsored a sale of WTGH shirts. The profit from this project was donated to the Garlock Family. Ed Garlock is the father of two students at WTGH. He has brain cancer. The student council was able to donate $900.00 to the family. There will be a benefit for the Garlocks on June 14 in Grover Hill. Several of our students are participating in this as well.

 5. I also want to salute the three teachers who have retired at WTGH this year. Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. Glick, and Mrs. Peck will certainly be missed and their service and dedication to the school has been appreciated.

6 Scores from the Spring administration of the OAT’s should be arriving soon, but were not available at this time.
