Report to the Wayne Trace Board of Education

Monday, August 11, 2008

Wayne Trace Grover Hill Elementary – Alan Lautzenheiser, Principal

Summer work is on schedule and we are looking forward to the return of students to WTGH. Teachers have been working in their classrooms and as of this report we have registered 8 new students for this fall.

Two teachers, Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Beining attended a conference on differentiated instruction this summer. They are also part of differentiated instruction training that is taking place locally at the NPAC as a train the trainer program. They will be the lead individuals for training WTGH staff on effectively differentiating instruction in the classroom. This has the effect of meeting individual students learning styles and will help foster our goals for success. The combining of grade 5 into 1 section with an aide has enabled us to double classroom size in grades 4-6. This will enable teachers to utilize learning stations and labs and will make the implementation of differentiation more effective.

Opening day meetings are scheduled with the staff for 10:00 on August 19. Open house will also take place on this day from 5:30 until 7:00.

We started out the summer by contacting as many companies as we could locate to take a look at our pull out stage. Every one of them told us that they weren’t made anymore and that our options were severely limited. We continued to look and we have found a representative for the company that built and installed the original stage. That is the good news. The bad news is that the company no longer makes the stage in the height that we would need it. They only make a 24 inch version which would result in approximately a 6 inch drop from the permanent portion of the stage to the pull out portion. This would be a safety issue. The other negative is that the cost to replace it with the lower stage would be $18,500.00. The representative has offered to send a crew to refurbish our current stage for a cost of $2800.00. At Brian’s direction, I have contacted the company to go that route and am in the process of getting that scheduled.

The WTGH Parent/Student Handbook is ready for approval by the board. The only changes from last year’s handbook is some minor language changes to make sure that WTGH and WTPE were parallel and the inclusion of the handbook material from NELOA. The book fees for WTGH are also ready for your approval.

Brian and I will be meeting with Janet Sinn on August 14 to finalize plans for playground improvements and tree removal plans.

Date: August, 2008

Subject:  Principal’s Report for August

1-  We would like to welcome Kelly Stouffer as our new 5th grade teacher.  We are excited to have as part of the WTPE staff.  And we are excited to have a second 5th grade teacher.

2-  Cindy Crosby will be subbing for Mrs. Sweeney while she is on medical leave.

3-  After receiving the scores for the OAT, we will be analyzing the data and discussing what we need to do to better help the students prepare for the test.  Our teachers and students work very hard, so it is not an issue of working hard, we just have to figure out what we need to do to work smarter.

4-  Our PTO took over Market Day for the months of July and August.  Thank you to the PTO!!!  We will continue again with each grade level and the office being responsible for a month.

5-  Last school year, the WTPE students went wild with reading.  We had great success with AR, and our students were excited about what they were reading.  We had so much fun with our students and their successes that we are building on that with our theme for the year.  We are going to adopt “WTPE is Wild About Reading” as our theme.  We are going to be doing some fun activities so the students can share their excitement about the books they are reading.

6-  We have built into the schedule a time for Study Island for 5th and 6th grade.  We will be using that time to utilize Study Island and also have that time available for additional OAT practice and intervention time.

7-  In April we will begin our Saturday OAT Booster classes.

8-  As usual, Bill Childs and Jerry Crone have this building shining.  It looks fantastic!  Jerry has added some painting touches that have really added some great color and accents.  Our helper this year has been Angelo Harris.  He has done a great job!

9-  Our Open House will be on Tuesday, August 19th from 5-6:30pm.
