One of two local districts in Paulding County, the Wayne
Trace District comprises most of the southern portion of the county. It
is a rural district covering approximately 179 square miles. Farming and
agriculturally-related businesses predominate the district’s economy.
However, many residents of the district work in industrial plants and
factories in the surrounding area.
Although there are some shopping and dining areas within the district,
there are shopping malls, restaurants, and theaters within close driving
distance in Paulding, Defiance, Van Wert, Lima, and Fort Wayne.
Housing is available in the Wayne Trace District as well as in the
surrounding communities. Many churches are in the area, and individuals
can pursue a diversity of religious beliefs.
School Organization
The Wayne Trace Schools have a PK-6 and 7-12
organizational pattern. The district’s 1,107 students are housed in
three buildings according to the following:
School Grades Enrollment:
Grover Hill Elementary PK-6: 262
Payne Elementary PK-6: 298
Jr.-Sr. High School 7-12: 547
The Grover Hill Elementary building was completed in 1983. This new
facility contains 35,000 square feet of usable floor space. It is a
colorful one-story structure which features an open library/media center
and a carpeted gymnasium for physical education classes and assemblies.
Along with the regular education program, which involves 15 teachers,
the school contains a developmentally handicapped class, a learning
disabilities program,
a speech therapy program , a part-time reading specialist, and a
part-time guidance counselor.
Additionally, the building is served by a full-time principal, three
aides, three food service personnel, two custodians, two pre-school
teachers, 1 1/2 Title I teachers, and an office secretary.
Payne Elementary also has 15 teachers in its regular education program.
To complement this program is a learning disabilities class, a
developmentally handicapped class, a hearing impaired program, and a
speech program. This facility also has a full-time principal, a
secretary, three aides, three custodians, three cafeteria employees, a
part-time reading specialist, and a part-time guidance counselor. A
pre-school handicapped teacher and 1 1/2 Title I teachers are also part
of the school’s program.
In 1989, 45,000 square feet were added to the Jr./Sr. High School. This
addition includes classrooms for science and business, vocational
agriculture, physical education, music, and several offices for guidance
and athletic personnel. Highly regarded in the area for the quality and
selection of its food service items, the Wayne Trace cafeteria offers a
selection of food service items which are second to none. The
cafeteria-commons area was part of this new addition.
The Vantage Vocational School, located in Van Wert, enrolls
approximately 60 students from Wayne Trace annually. Wayne Trace Vantage
students may select from about 20 different vocational programs.
Wayne Trace High School offers over 60 units of credit and takes great
pride in its college preparatory, vocational, and general education
classes. The school also has a learning disabilities program, a multiple
handicapped program, and a developmental handicapped class.
District-wide, 9 resource room teachers meet the needs of all our
special education students.
The staff at the Jr./Sr. High School includes three custodians, two
secretaries, a study hall monitor, six cafeteria personnel, a guidance
counselor, one librarian, a tech coordinator, 31 teachers, a building
principal, and an assistant principal.
Thirteen bus drivers, nearly all driving double routes mornings and
afternoons, safely transport our students to their destinations. A
school nurse serves all three of the district’s buildings.

A Touch of Class
Wayne Trace students have experienced success in many areas over the
years. The FHA has had a state officer, and the FFA has produced many
state farmers and several national farmers over the years. The
scholastic bowl teams travels extensively as they pit their academic
skills against schools of any size.
The schools’ choral and instrumental music programs are certainly
growing with numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their
talents. Opportunities in the arts are available from drawing and
sketching to drama club and the performing arts.
Academically, our students participate in the Ohio Tests of Scholastic
Achievement, and our students have placed in the district and in the
state. In athletics our student athletes are quite competitive in the
Green Meadows Conference. Our athletes have achieved league
championships in football, volleyball, softball, golf, basketball, and
track, and a wide variety of sports opportunities are available to boys
and girls alike. Rewarding experiences await our staff, those who wish
to coach and become a part of an outstanding athletic program.
Mission Statement
The Mission of Wayne Trace Local Schools, as an interdependent
learning community committed to educational excellence, is to create an
enthusiastic zeal for life-long learning and to graduate all students
with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become thinking, productive
citizens in a changing global society; this is accomplished through a
system which supports community values and integrates community,
technological, and educational resources delivered in a safe environment
by a caring staff.
As the mission statement indicates, the educational system at Wayne
Trace reflects community standards. Teachers not only reflect the values
and morals of our community, but also lead our students into paths for
improvement... accepting nothing less than each individual’s best. Our
academic program places a high premium on excellence with a sound grasp
of the basics. Wayne Trace Local Schools met 20 of the 27 standards set
by the state on the most recent School District Report Card, and we
typically celebrate the highest proficiency scores among area school
districts.
