Installing Netware/IntranetWare Support Packs

Note:  This document covers in general how to install IntranetWare 4.11 and Netware 5.0 Support Packs.  IntranetWare support packs are named IWSPxx.EXE where the xx is replaced by a number and a letter (i.e. 5b, 6a, etc.).   Netware 5 Support Packs are named NW5SPxx.exe where xx is replaced by a number and sometimes a letter (i.e. 2a, 3).

Before You Begin

As with any time that you add software to a computer system, it is possible that the installation of a Support Pack can cause problems with your server.  Therefore, be sure to back up your server completely prior to this installation procedure.

Creating a location for your Netware/IntranetWare Support Pack

We recommend that you place the support pack files on the SYS: volume in a directory called PATCHES. If such a directory does not current exist on your server, please create it now.  If you have limited space on SYS, you may want to keep the PATCHES directory cleaned up or move it to a volume with more space.

Downloading and extracting the Netware/IntranetWare Support Packs

  1. From the Novell Support Connection page (http://support.novell.com/) choose the File Finder option.
  2. Choose the Browse Files by Product link
  3. Choose the Netware link and the appropriate version of NetWare (i.e. Netware 4.11 or Netware 5)
  4. You will then see a list of files, one of which is the most current patch.  See the note above for more details on the patch filename.
  5. Click on the patch's filename then click the word Connect to start the download.
  6. Save the file on one of the Server volumes. (F:\PATCHES is recommended, see the note above)
  7. Once the Support Pack is downloaded, extract the files by running the downloaded EXE file.  This will create a new directory with the same name as the support pack within the directory (i.e. F:\PATCHES) that it was run from.

 

Installing Netware/IntranetWare Support Pack

Note:  The screen shots below are provided to help you with the installation process.  The screenshots illustrate installing Support Pack 5b on an IntranetWare 4.11 server.  Please adjust accordingly as you do your installation.

From the File Server Console load the appropriate installation NLM

for IntranetWare 4.11 and below use -> SERVER: LOAD INSTALL
for Netware 5.0 and above use -> SERVER: LOAD NWCONFIG

From the Installation Options choose Product Options

From the screen above choose Install a Product not listed. This will ask you where you want to install the product from (the floppy drive is the default), press F3 to specify a different drive and path. You will get the following box to type in the path of the product to be installed:

 

If you saved there Support Pack file to the SYS Volume in the Patches directory your directory path would look like the one above.

 

To finish the Install just press the F10 key install the groups marked.

 

Once the Support Pack is installed you will be asked to restart the server for the changes to take effect.
