Deploying
and Maintaining Internet Services (Covering both Netware and NT)
One day.
This session will cover in varing degrees a variety of Internet standard
services that can be run on a variety of servers. The focus of this session

Data Sources,
Database Development, and Web Deployment
Two days.
This session will cover the following three topics. First we will look at
what sources of data are available to schools districts and some of the
methods to obtain that data (both manual and automatic). During that time,
we will discuss security issues, centralized vs. decentralized storage of
data, and strategies for collecting useful information rather than just raw
data. Interaction between all participants will be encouraged. The second
topic of the course will be effective database design and development
techniques. The hands-on portion of this will be with either Microsoft
Access or Filemaker Pro. The final topic of this session will be web
deployment of this data. This part of the session will cover security
issues and techniques, web based forms and display techniques, and
suggestions on building and deploying the desired information as well as
sources for more information on doing this. This last topic will include
some hands-on work with products that allow you to web enable Microsoft
Access and also the built-in FileMaker Pro publishing capabilities.

Email Fundamentals, IMAP4, and
LDAP
One day.
Email continues to become more widely used and crucial to the daily
operations in running your school. This session starts out with some
background information on the way the email is sent, received, and viewed
along with the standards and technologies that make this all possible.
Next, we will do some hands-on activities using an IMAP4 client. IMAP4 is
supported on the NOACSC Alpha computer. Its primary advantage is that it
gives you a graphical view of your email messages while keeping the messages
intact on the machine serving as the mail host. That allows you or those in
your buildings that use the NOACSC Alpha to work with email either via a
text based or graphical interface while all messages stay on a machine where
they are backed up nightly. LDAP will be the last topic of the day. LDAP
is an Internet based directory service that allows you to search for and
find information about people listed in those directories.

Leveraging Internet Technologies
One day.
This session will provide a forum to discuss and explore ways that we can
use the various Internet technologies to the benefit of our districts.
These benefits can include additional resources and information for our
teaching staff, better communication with parents and community members, or
providing a more challenging and/or motivating learning experience for our
students.

NAL, Zen, Login Scripts
This session will focus on technologies that can be used to help in the
management and maintainability of Windows computers. NAL is a the Netware
Application Laucher that when run with Client 32, allows you to have a menu
of valid options which appear for each user of that workstation. NAL works
by maintaining icons in Netware Administrator that allow you to determine
what groups of people should see those icons.

Video Conferencing
Servers and Workstations
This session will give you hands-on experience with video conferencing
servers and workstations being utilized by member schools of the NOACSC.
As you are probably already know, several schools are piloting various video
conferencing equipment. At this session, you will be introduced to the
video conferencing workstations that are used to transmit and receive the
video stream. To have more than two sites in a video conference, you need a
multiconferencing unit. During this session, you will have the opportunity
to see how such a conference is setup, the connections are made, and the
conference is monitored using a multiconferencing unit housed at the NOACSC.
