Black Swamp Scholars Teacher Quality Grant
Ashland University and the Western Buckeye ESC received an Ohio Board of Regents Improving Teacher Quality Grant for the 2003-2004 school year. The purpose of the grant is to increase K-12 student achievement in math and science by forming a mentoring partnership between Ashland University and the Western Buckeye Area Schools.
The goals of the project are to Increase:
Teacher and Student Growth in math and science knowledge
Amount of time for teachers to reflect on practice
Practices leading to the building and supporting a Community of Learners
100 Teachers in the Paulding and Van Wert Area Schools will be a part of an exciting professional development opportunity. In coordination with Ashland University, math and science teachers will be able to attend a Summer Academy emphasizing inquiry and research-based math and science. They will participate in Hands-on activities based on the new Ohio Academic Content Standards. The learning environment will be integrated from a science/science and a science/math perspective, providing a base for measurements and data analysis, which are fundamental to all areas of the inquiry approach. During the school year, teachers will participate in Study Tables and Peer Coaching. In May, participants will be invited back for a two day Debriefing Summit to synthesize what they have learned.
