Powell Elementary has a very diverse population of students. The Powell
staff works diligently to meet the needs of every student. Listed below
are the programs designed to meet their needs. Click on the area and you
can learn about the program as well as the staff member who provides the
service.

Reading Services
Many of Powell's students have benefited from the services of our remedial
reading staff. Powell has three teachers who specialize in helping students
improve reading skills. We also have a teacher who specializes in helping
students with readiness skills.
Beginnergarten

Mrs. Kim Conkle spends every afternoon helping "beginnergarteners"
gain prereading, simple math and small motor skills. One of the great features
of the class is the small class size of only twelve students. Next year
the "beginnergarteners" will be ready for traditional kindergarten.

Reading

Mr. Mark Detamore (left) helps upper elementary students to improve
their reading skills. Mrs. Jeanne Titus (center) and Mrs. Connie Patchett
(right) aide the primary students at Powell with their reading. Students
receive supplemental instruction in small group settings.

Reading Recovery

Miss Phyllis Amicon, Reading Recovery supervisor from the Wood County
Educational Service Center, assists students from Powell at the first grade
level on a one-to-one basis.

Enrichment

Miss Karen Fincher is Powell's enrichment teacher. She helps to stimulate
students and extends them beyond the regular curriculum.

Special Education

Powell is fortunate to have three special education teachers, Mrs. Rosemary
Henderson (seated center), Mrs. Ann Broughton (left), and Miss Jennifer
Carter (right), and an aide, Mrs. Beverly Hartman (standing), to help meet
the needs of students who are having difficulties learning in the traditional
classroom setting.

Occupational Therapist

Mrs. Nancy Beck is an occupational therapist who helps some of our students
at Powell to develop fine motor and perceptual skills.

Speech

Mrs. Sharon Perez is our speech therapist. She assists students who
are having speech or language problems.

Onsite Therapy

Powell is lucky to have children's therapist, Mrs. Olwen Pritchard (left),
and community worker, Miss Amanda Biddle, as part of our staff. Students
can receive services without leaving the building.

Psychological Services

Mr. Bob Kuhlman, our school psychologist, has the job of evaluating
students to determine their needs and to recommend which services would
most benefit each child.

Other Services
Powell also offers other extra services. Powell children can receive
physical therapy, adaptive physical education, proficiency intervention
for grades 4-6, and drug/alcohol counseling. We strive to meet the needs
of every student!
