Ms. Julie Carr
Literacy Intervention Specialist and Reading Recovery

“I became a teacher because I think I can make a difference in a child’s life. Reading Recovery is very exciting and rewarding because you get to see a child excel rapidly and increase their self esteem.”

Ms. Amanda Jacobs
Literacy Intervention Teacher

Mrs. Becky Lucas
Fourth Grade & Intermediate Literacy Coordinator

Mrs. Lucas’s favorite saying is “too many books and not enough time”. She tries to teach according to a quote from Daniel Pennac: “Reading is a gift. Read and wait. Curiosity can’t be forced. It must be awakened. Read and trust the eyes that open slowly, the faces that light up, the questions that begin to form and give way to other questions.” She feels children learn best in learning centered classrooms and that every child can learn.

Mrs. Jeanne Titus
Primary Literacy Coordinator

Mr. Mark Detamore
Reading Recovery & Intervention Teacher

Not only is Mr. Detamore a teacher on staff, he’s also a well-known songwriter to the staff and students of Powell. He was honored earlier in the 2004-2005 school year when the entire school recorded two of his songs on a CD titled, “The Magic of Reading.” Not only does he enjoy his songwriting, he enjoys his work as a teacher. “It’s important to get kids excited about learning. I like to help the students see why they need to know something and how it applies to their life.
