Julie Carr
Literacy Intervention Specialist and Reading Recovery
“I
became a teacher because I think I can make a difference in a
child’s life. Reading Recovery is very exciting and rewarding
because you get to see a child excel rapidly and increase their
self esteem.”

Ms.
Amanda Jacobs
Literacy Intervention Teacher
I have always loved reading to children and knew that someday I would be a teacher. Being a teacher is the most rewarding job. I believe that every child should have the opportunity to succeed. I enjoy building my students’ self esteem so they feel good about themselves. Every day is a learning experience, and I love being there to share it with the children.

Becky Lucas
Fourth Grade & Intermediate Literacy Coordinator
Mrs.
Lucas’s favorite saying is “too many books and not
enough time”. She tries to teach according to a quote from
Daniel Pennac: “Reading is a gift. Read and wait. Curiosity
can’t be forced. It must be awakened. Read and trust the
eyes that open slowly, the faces that light up, the questions
that begin to form and give way to other questions.” She
feels children learn best in learning centered classrooms and
that every child can learn. |

Mr.
Mark Detamore
Reading Recovery & Intervention Teacher
Not
only is Mr. Detamore a teacher on staff, he’s also a well-known
songwriter to the staff and students of Powell. He was honored
earlier in the 2004-2005 school year when the entire school recorded
two of his songs on a CD titled, “The Magic of Reading.”
Not only does he enjoy his songwriting, he enjoys his work as
a teacher. “It’s important to get kids excited about
learning. I like to help the students see why they need to know
something and how it applies to their life. |
Ms.
Amy Hunsaker
Intervention Teacher
I have always thought that education is about character development as much as content. Watching children grow into conscientious, caring adults can be so rewarding and being a piece of that, however small, is what makes this job the best in the world! Helping children that are struggling find new ways to access the curriculum and learn to love school as much as I did and still do is at the core of my philosophy. I have a background in theatre, both academically and professionally, and use my skills every day to make learning exciting and fun. I remember every one of my elementary school teachers by name. I am so excited to be at Powell and look forward to becoming one of the teachers here that the children will remember as someone who helped them learn and grow. |
