Everyday Math Program

Summary:

Everyday Mathematics is a program designed for children in grades kindergarten through sixth by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project and is grounded in extensive research. It is a program that is both rigorous and balanced. Highlights of the program include:

  • a curriculum that emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills
  • a curriculum that explores the full mathematics spectrum, not just basic arithmetic
  • a curriculum based on how children learn, what they’re interested in, and the future for which they must be prepared (Everyday Mathematics, Content by Strands, 2007)

The Everyday Math program is consistent with the way children learn math. They build skills over a period of time by looping back to revisit skills on a regular basis. First, students are exposed to skills (beginning level), and then they have an opportunity to explore the skills (developing level) and then are expected to master the skill (secure level). This may take place over the course of one school year – or more typically – over several years.

The program has been matched with our state mathematic content standards as well as the mathematics strands. The program believes that all students are capable of a greater understanding and proficiency than has been expected of traditional math programs, establishing high expectations for all students.
